Pruning - How, What, and When

Most ornamental shrubs need regular pruning — some need just minor corrections to remove stray growth, others need more serious trimming to keep them in check. Whatever the case, follow these basic guidelines.

Ensure your tools are sharp and in good condition. Dull blades make ragged cuts, which not only look bad but also take longer to heal. Worse, they can slip and cause injury. Clean tools with alcohol to prevent spreading plant diseases. Always wear protective clothing and safety glasses — debris can fly unexpectedly.

Understand your plant’s natural growth habit. Pruned shrubs should still look natural unless you’re going for a formal garden style. When pruning a group of similar shrubs, keep their size and shape consistent to avoid an uneven look.

Some plants grow year-round and shouldn’t be pruned in late fall or winter, as new growth may be damaged by frost. Prune these in spring, with light touch-ups during the growing season if needed.

Flowering shrubs require extra care. If the buds are already set, wait until after blooming to prune. Knowing whether the plant blooms once a year (and when that takes place) is important. For example, azaleas and rhododendrons produce buds right after flowering. Certain hydrangeas bloom only on old wood and need careful spring pruning, while others bloom on new growth and can be pruned more freely. If unsure, contact our staff for guidance.

Hedges are excellent for privacy but need consistent maintenance. Keep tops even and sides slightly tapered so sunlight reaches all leaves. Remove pruning debris because it may harbor diseases or attract pests. Avoid over-pruning; let hedges recover by flushing out new growth before trimming again.

Pruning is an art. When done right, it gives your landscape a crisp, well-maintained appearance. Some plants respond quickly, while others require years of patient shaping. Don’t rush — plants can recover from poor pruning over time.

Know your plants, prune wisely, and enjoy the beauty they bring to your property.
