The name Wyomissing comes from the Indian name that means “place of flats.” This makes sense since compared to its nearby areas, Wyomissing is very flat. One of the earliest industries in the city was the Evans Grist Mill, which is still standing at the corner of Old Mill Road and Old Wyomissing Road. Today, with easy access to Routes 422 and 222, Wyomissing has some of the best shopping and restaurants in the area. It is also home to the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts and the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum.
Mid Atlantic Air Museum
There’s something for everyone at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum. Located at Reading Pennsylvania’s Regional Airport, the museum was established to preserve the history of aviation and to enhance the public’s appreciation and understanding of that history. The museum’s collection emphasizes the Mid-Atlantic region’s contribution to flight while also chronicling a general history of aviation overall. The museum includes exhibitions of artifacts, demonstrations, lectures, educational exhibits, and special events.
GoggleWorks Center for the Arts
GoggleWorks Center for the Arts is a community cultural and art center. It is located in the 145,000-square foot, five-story former historic Willson Goggle factory building. Founded by Gile J. Willson and Dr. Thomas A. Willson, the Willson Goggle factory was the first company in the U.S. to manufacture optical lenses.
Today, the center houses 35 artists’ studios and a number of galleries for exhibitions. It has seven large teaching studios for ceramics, warm and hot glass, jewelry, printmaking, photography, and wood. The center is also home to the offices of several of culture, arts, and creative economy organizations. The center’s campus includes a 131-seat theatre that features movies about art on a daily basis and a store that sells the artwork of more than 200 artists from all over the country.
