Aeration and Overseeding - Get a Thicker and Healthier Lawn

Aeration & Overseeding:
The combination of aeration and overseeding is important to undertake for having a healthy lawn. Aeration is accomplished by using a machine (a core aerator) which pulls plugs of soil (about the size of a thumb) out of the ground and drops them on top of the ground. Pulling these soil plugs out of the ground allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots of the grass. This process can reduce thatch and ease hard, compacted soil. Overseeding is spreading grass seed over the lawn that has been aerated to improve bare spots and help with new growth. The advantage of overseeding after aeration has been done is that the grass seed comes in direct contact with the soil and has space to germinate and develop fully. The condition and look of your lawn will be greatly improved with this process.

Lawn Maintenance:
Aeration and overseeding should be done at least once a year to help alleviate the wear and tear put on your lawn. This process allows nutrients to reach the roots of your grass and improves the effectiveness of applications of fertilizer. It also stimulates and promotes better root growth and development for your grass. Ultimately, it improves the resilience of your yard to drought and disease. With aeration and overseeding, your lawn’s appearance is visibly thicker and overall healthier.

Treatment:
The optimal time for aerating and overseeding lawns in Pennsylvania is in late August to October. If left untreated, your lawn will become thin and worn due to no new growth and traffic on it. Overseeding is more successful this time of year because there is reduced weed competition and less extended periods of heat or too wet of conditions for the soil. When watered on a consistent, daily basis, seed germination takes approximately 10-14 days after overseeding. By taking advantage of aerating and overseeding your lawn, on a yearly basis, you are on the right track for a healthy, green lawn.
