Nutsedge - Don't Let This Weed Go Nuts in Your Lawn
Nutsedge
Nutsedge is a persistent, aggressive lawn weed that grows during warm temperatures – mostly in the spring and summer months. It thrives in moist, poorly drained soils in full and moderate shaded areas. The most common variety in the South Eastern Pennsylvania area is yellow/light green in color with a coarse texture. While regular blades of grass are rounded, nutsedge, on the other hand, has a distinct “V” shape with three sides and three points. Nutsedge is an underground microscopic seed that veins and spreads throughout the lawn. This tall light green plant is a pesky weed, growing three times faster than regular grass. Nutsedge can grow in large colonies, forming an extensive root system that can reach as deep as four feet. Where the weed is seen, the nut underground has an expansive reach of 15 or 20 feet in any direction.
Lawn Management
Improving your lawn’s density through fertilization, regular mowing, and use of grasses well-suited to your property’s conditions will help slow the spread of nutsedge. Although this is the optimal approach, it may not provide effective elimination of nutsedge once it becomes established. If left untreated, nutsedge will be a nuisance and continue to grow and spread. Beware of hand pulling nutsedge because this will result in expanding the growth of nutsedge next year.
Treatment
Showcase LawnWorks offers several approaches to ridding your property of this unsightly, fast-growing weed. One approach we offer is to spot treat the area as often as the property owner wishes. This will take down any nutsedge that has germinated. This treatment takes care of the surface weed but does not kill the seed underground. To take care of the seed underground, Showcase attacks the weed with a two-application blanket treatment which should stop the nutsedge for the season. An annual application may be necessary since there is no guarantee it won’t return the next year. A spot treated area will show improvement within a few days and within a few weeks for a blanket treatment.
